Hot Weather Powersports Maintenance | Carson, CA | Powersports Dealer
Hot weather can be rough on a powersports vehicle. Not only does the vehicle’s cooling system have to work overtime, but the heat can put additional strain on the air condition and tires as well. This guide from SoCal Honda Powersports can tell you more about how to best maintain your powersports vehicle during hot weather.
The Coolant
Coolant helps bleed heat out of your powersports vehicle’s engine, thus preventing it from overheating. While how often you’ll need to change the coolant depends on the model, in general you should check the coolant levels every 20,000 miles, every 500 hours of operation, or every three months, whichever comes first. You should also occasionally check the condition of the coolant itself to ensure that it isn’t discolored, cloudy, or full of debris.
The Air Conditioning
If your powersports vehicle has a built-in air-conditioning unit, be sure to flush the system of debris as necessary. It’s also important that you check the condition of any hoses and fittings connected to the system. Fittings should be tight, while hoses should be free of cracks. Don’t forget to change the filters as well!
The Tires
Extreme temperature can force the rubber in tires to expand, adding additional stain. Besides just keeping track of tread depth and removing anything that gets stuck in the tire as you normally would, take extra care to keep the tires within the manufacturer recommended pressure range.
Keep the Vehicle Cool
When riding your powersports vehicle in hot weather, park in shady areas whenever possible. A sunshield will help deflect some of the heat away. You can also keep the windows open while riding to help with air circulation. Many powersports vehicles have a built-in temperature gauge that can help you keep track of how hot the vehicle has become.
