Basic Control Elements of Street Bikes on Gravel

Riding a street bike on a gravel surface isn't impossible. However, it does require a certain level of care and attention to your technique. 

  • Avoid leaning too far to either side. This is one of the worst things you can do when you're navigating a gravel surface.
  • Use wide turns, and use most of the road if you have to. Keep the motorcycle as straight as possible.
  • Don't give your bike any sudden input, regardless of what that input is. This means no quick accelerating, braking, or turning. Take your time regardless of the maneuver.

Don't Panic

If you approach an unexpected patch of gravel, the most important thing to remember is not to panic. You want to keep a steady head and remain calm. When you panic, it can be hard to make quick, crucial decisions. Take a deep breath, keep your speed steady, and keep your distance. 

If there are other vehicles on the road, give yourself plenty of space between yourself and them. There should be enough road space to give you all the stopping distance you need, and then some. 

Don't Look Down

Remember one of the first rules you probably learned on a motorcycle? Don't look down, and keep your eyes on your target destination. This will prove to be extremely helpful when you're on gravel. 

Don't look down at the treacherous surface. It won't do you any good. Rely on your riding skills and feel your way through the loose rock and sand. Trust your riding skills, and trust your bike.
