Your Motorcycle Maintenance Checklist
Following a maintenance checklist will help ensure that your bike doesn't leave you on the side of the road. The following is our recommended motorcycle maintenance checklist. Visit SoCal Honda Powersports for any of your motorcycle accessory or repair needs. We are located in Carson, CA, and proudly serve riders from the Los Angeles and Long Beach areas.
Use Fresh Fuel
Change out the fuel if you haven't driven your motorcycle in a while. Stale gas that sits in the tank too long isn't good for your motor. Before riding your bike, siphon out the old gas and fill up the tank with fresh fuel.
Don't Forget the Oil
Just like you need fresh fuel, you also need clean oil. Change out the oil and oil filter if you're going out on your first ride in some time. Not refreshing the oil can affect the longevity, safety, and performance of your motorcycle.
Perform a Fluid Check
Besides gas and oil, you also need to check the coolant and brake fluid. Important for your bike's maintenance, they can also leak sometimes if your motorcycle has been standing for awhile. Make sure to top off or refill your fluid levels or completely flush out the fluids and replace them with new ones as necessary.
Check Other Levels
If your battery has been connected and sitting all winter, it could be dead. If it's pretty new, it should be fine just to charge it up, but if its several years old, it may not keep a charge. It's important to check the strength of the battery and then determine if you need a new one. Also remember to check the tire pressure and fill up your tires accordingly.
Inspect the Tire Tread
After your tires have been properly inflated, you will need to check your tire tread and inspect your tires for sidewall bubbles, bald spots, or other warning signs that your tires may be unsafe to drive on. If you can't decide if you need tires or not, remember that it's cheaper to buy a new tire than to repair a bike after a tire blowout.
Examine the Cables
After sitting awhile, your cables may also have some dry grease and oil in them, which can affect your throttle and clutch performance. Either use a hydraulic cable oiler in order to restore the oil, or bring it in to SoCal Honda Powersports so we can do the job for you.
Keep It Clean
And finally, give your motorcycle a complete cleaning. This will protect the paint as well as keep it in better working condition.
