ATVs are designed to be tough enough to overcome even the roughest of off-road conditions. However, even the most durable machines eventually reach their breaking point. Through a combination of regular maintenance and responsible behaviors, you can make your quad last a lot longer than it could otherwise. This guide from SoCal Honda Powersports can tell you how to extend your ATV’s lifespan.

Change the Oil and Coolant

Two things that can really do a number on your ATV’s engine are overheating and internal components scraping against each other. The best way to keep these things at bay is to regularly check your ATV’s coolant and engine oil. Besides topping them off as needed, you’ll also need to keep an eye on the conditions of these fluids themselves.

Clean Your ATV Regularly

Leaving dirt and grime clinging to your ATV encourages corrosion and makes it more likely that dirt will find its way into your engine. A simple monthly cleaning can go a long way towards helping your quad to perform better and last longer.

Check the CV Belt

Many (though not all) currently available ATV models have a CV belt transmission. While identifying if a CV belt is worn down and close to snapping with the naked eye is very difficult if you’re not a mechanic, there are still a few things that you can look out for if you want to avoid a belt snap. Performance issues or the smell of burning rubber are signs that you may need to bring your ATV to the service center.

Treat Your Fuel

Fuel that sits in your ATV’s fuel tank for too long will break down and clog your fuel lines. If your quad is going to sit idle for a long period of time, be sure to either empty the tank or add some fuel stabilizer.

Ride Wisely

Lastly, know your machine’s limits and be cautious when you ride. This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t enjoy the full experience of owning a quad, avoid aggressive braking and accelerating when possible. Don’t push your ATV past its limits if you can help it.
